Main Street Alliance on the State of the Union

March 2, 2022

In reaction to President Biden’s State of the Union speech last night, Co-Executive Director of Main Street Alliance Chanda Causer had this to say:

“Last night, President Biden spoke directly to the American people about the progress of the last year in the face of deep challenges, as well as his optimism for the future. Failing to pass voting rights legislation that protects our democracy directly threatens our economy. The continued blocking, at every turn, does not provide small businesses confidence in the state of our democracy or local economy. The Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act aims to achieve goals that have long had strong bipartisan support. These include prohibiting gerrymandering, and increasing disclosure of money spent in federal elections, which are particularly important to small businesses - ignored over excessive corporate influence...”

January 18, 2021

On the FTC and DOJ announcement to restore antimonopoly merger guidelines, Main Street Alliance’s Director of Policy and Political Impact Didier Trinh had this to say:

“The trend in unabated mergers over the last few decades is how many large corporations have gone from simply large to monopolistic. Monopolies and corporate concentration have real impacts across the small business economy. As we hear from members, this has been an ongoing issue that is directly impacting small business bottom lines and competitiveness. Main Street Alliance applauds the FTC and DOJ for making a real investment to stem the flood of anti-competitive mergers. Antitrust regulation and enforcement is one place where we can look to build a more resilient and fair economy coming out of the pandemic.”
