Real choice for small businesses
The DC lobby groups that claim to represent small businesses on health care have been carrying water for big money interests for too long.
Just a few weeks ago, National Federation of Independent Business President Donald Danner stood next to America’s Health Insurance Plans CEO Karen Ignagni and declared, “We would have concerns about anything that looks like it could be destructive to the current private marketplace in health care.”
Huh? You mean, the same private marketplace in health care that routinely gives small businesses a raw deal?
Small businesses are a key voice in the debate over health reform, and Members of Congress are looking to us to see what we have to say about fixing health care.
One thing is clear: small businesses are getting the short end of the stick in the private insurance market – skyrocketing costs, no bargaining power, routine (and legal) discrimination. We have as much to gain as anyone from enacting reform that includes the choice of a public health insurance plan to increase competition, drive down costs, and provide a guarantee of quality coverage we can count on.
